Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. The aunt worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at college. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to watch and search the home of a particular member of the Jury. In the course of her work she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the public relations industry. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
